The NASRDA-Centre for Basic Space Science which is saddled with the responsibility of carrying out scientific observation of the Moon; the nearest celestial object to the Earth, has successfully calculated and predicted that the first astronomical lunar crescent for the month of February, 2025 will appear and may be sighted with unaided eye on FRIDAY, 28th.

Explicitly, the conjunction of the Moon will occur at about 1:45am (1:45hours) on Friday 28th February 2025. However, sighting this very young lunar crescent will be possible under perfect atmospheric conditions as well as the ability of the observer to employ an optical aid (Binocular or Telescope) during the observation.

Precisely, the first lunar crescent that will be visible to an unaided (naked) eye will appear in the evening sky of Friday 28th February 2025 between the hours of 6:17pm and 7:35pm after Sunset across different cities in Nigeria. Because the Moon’s age is still just less than 18-hours after conjunction; it is very important to note that this very young lunar crescent can easily be seen with unaided eye in our evening sky, after it may have been found/spotted/identified with the assistance of an optical aid (Binocular or Telescope).

       The first lunar crescent visibility to unaided eye according to States in Nigeria is as follows:

  • Maiduguri (Borno State) will be the first to witness the first young lunar crescent from about 6:17pm to 6:48pm.
  • This would be followed by Yola (Adamawa State) from 6:21pm to 6:51pm.
  • Damaturu (Yobe State) from 6:22pm to 6:53pm.
  • Jalingo (Taraba State) from about 6:26pm to 6:56pm 
  • Gombe (Gombe State) from about 6:29pm to 7:00pm.
  • The Lunar crescent will be sighted lastly at Ikeja (Lagos State) from 6:59pm to 7:30pm
  • It will be sighted in Abeokuta (Ogun State) between 6:59pm and 7:30pm.
  • In Abuja, the first lunar crescent will appear between 6:44pm and 7:15pm, with sunset at about 6:44pm, and moonset at about 7:20pm.
  • In Kano (Kano State), the appearance of the first lunar crescent will be experienced between 6:35pm and 7:07pm, with sunset and moonset occurring at about 6:35pm and 7:12pm respectively.
  • In Katsina (Katsina State), the first lunar crescent will appear between the hours of 6:38pm and 7:10pm with sunset and moonset at about 6:38pm and 7:15pm respectively.
  • In Jos (Plateau State) the crescent will appear between the hours of 6:35pm and 7:06pm with sunset and moonset at 6:35pm and 7:11pm respectively.
  • In Enugu (Enugu State), the lunar crescent will appear from 6:42pm to 7:13pm, with sunset and moonset at about 6:42pm and 7:18pm respectively.
  • In Kaduna the crescent moon will appear between 6:40pm and 7:12pm, while the sun and moon is expected to set at about 6:40pm and 7:17pm respectively. 
  • All other States of the federation will experience the lunar crescent between the estimated time of 6:17pm and 7:35pm on Friday, 28th February, 2025.

The results released by the Agency show precise date, appearance time of first crescent, time of sunset as well as moonset for all the State Capitals and the Federal Capital Territory on Friday 28th February 2025.

The statement added that, the calculated results are made available for the information of the general public especially those who would need them for religious and academic purposes. Furthermore, scientific researchers should be at liberty to request for detailed analyses or more results for other cities within the federation other than the State capitals from the Space Agency.

FG unveils national greenhouse gas emission programme

President Bola Tinubu has launched the National Greenhouse Gas Emission Monitoring Programme (NGHGEMP) in partnership with Netzence Sustainability Limited, marking a significant step towards a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2025 Environmental Health Excellence Awards Ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, emphasised his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, climate action, and public health. “This event is not just a recognition of individual excellence but a testament to our collective resolve to forge a Nigeria where clean air, safe water, and sustainable practices are the birthright of every citizen,” he said. The President reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to environmental policies that prioritise both people and the planet, highlighting bold initiatives such as the National Environmental Health Regulation 2024 – a framework to tackle pollution, waste management, and sanitation; the Greenhouse Gas Emission Register – a data-driven tool to monitor and reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint; the Carbon Analysis Framework – a roadmap for industries to transition to renewable energy and sustainable practices, and the Carbon Print Certificate – a national standard recognising eco-conscious businesses and communities. He stressed that while the government is taking the lead, partnerships across all sectors are crucial for success. “The government cannot act alone. From farmers adopting climate-smart techniques to corporations investing in green technology, every Nigerian has a role to play,” he stated. “If we reduce air pollution, we improve health conditions and lower disease rates. China to send a spacecraft out of the ecliptic to study the Sun’s poles

HELSINKI — China plans to send a space observatory out of the plane of the ecliptic for a mission to study the poles of the sun. The Solar Polar Orbit Observatory is currently scheduled to launch in 2029. The spacecraft will perform a gravity assist maneuver at Jupiter, altering its course to enter a high-inclination orbit around the Sun, enabling observations of the solar poles. An orbit over the Sun’s poles would provide a vantage point that would offer unique data on solar magnetic activity cycles and high-speed solar winds. This perspective is crucial for understanding phenomena that directly impact Earth’s space weather and technological infrastructure. The Ulysses mission, launched in 1990 and active until 2009, orbited the Sun at around 80 degrees relative to the ecliptic to make solar observations. China’s solar polar-orbit observatory is expected to orbit with an inclination of around 60-70 degrees, according to earlier journal articles. The solar polar orbiter mission is part of China’s wide-ranging National Space Science Medium- and Long-Term Development Plan (2024-2050) published in October. Science objectives and payloads The observatory aims to provide the first frontal imaging observation of solar polar regions, revealing the origin of the solar magnetic activity cycle, according to Luo. It will also produce a “Cloud Map” of Sun-interplanetary space, according to the presentation. The Solar Polar-orbit Observatory will be equipped with a suite of advanced instruments to carry out its science objectives. Its remote sensing instruments include a Magnetic and Helioseismic Imager, which will analyze the Sun’s magnetic field and internal oscillations, and an Extreme Ultraviolet Solar Telescope to capture high-energy solar emissions. The spacecraft will also carry a Visible-light Coronagraph and a Very Large Angle Coronagraph, enabling detailed observations of the Sun’s corona and solar wind structures. A Low Frequency Radio Spectrometer will study solar radio bursts, while an X-ray Imaging Telescope will provide crucial insights into high-energy solar events.  Complementing these observations, in-situ instruments will be the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer, Energetic Ion Analyzer, and Magnetometer. These will directly measure solar wind properties and the interplanetary magnetic field, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of solar activity and its effects on the heliosphere. Wider solar studies The solar polar observatory will not be China’s first mission dedicated to studying the Sun. This mantle goes to the Chinese H-alpha Solar Explorer (CHASE) launched in October 2021. The mission, also known as Xihe-1, observes the Sun in the H-alpha waveband, providing valuable data on solar activities.  This was followed by the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S), launched in October 2022. Also known as Kuafu-1, the probe focuses on observing solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and the solar magnetic field. China could also launch Xihe-2 to observe the Sun from the Sun-Earth L5 Lagrange point. Other space agencies are engaged in advanced space-based solar studies. NASA launched the Parker Solar Probe in 2018 and in December made an approach as close as 6.1 million kilometers to the Sun. The spacecraft is providing scientists with key data on the solar wind and corona as it flies through it.  The collaborative European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA Solar Orbiter mission was launched in 2020 and carries a suite of instruments designed for high-resolution imaging and in-situ measurements, enabling detailed studies of solar activity and its effects on the heliosphere.  India’s Aditya-L1 launched in September 2023 and is positioned at the Sun-Earth L1 with seven payloads for studying the solar atmosphere, magnetic field, and solar wind. Meanwhile, ESA’s Proba-3 mission consists of an Occulter and Coronagraph spacecraft flying in precise formation to emulate total solar eclipses to allow study of the solar corona.
